Gloria Lucile Farrell (Nee Maxwell) departed this life on the eve of St Valentine’s Day to join her husband of 66 years, Captain Roger Farrell. Gloria passed peacefully in the care of Community Hospice, in her home at San Jose Gardens. She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia Farrell of Ottawa, Canada and Holly Farrell, of Jacksonville, Florida, and preceded in death by her daughters, Julie Farrell, and Patricia Farrell. She will be lovingly remembered by her sons in law, Antony Breuer and Kenneth May, as well as numerous step grand-children and great grand-children.
Gloria and Roger met at Southwest High School in Kansas City, Missouri. She went off to Kansas University to study music, while Roger headed to the Naval Academy. It was at KU that Gloria started her long-term membership with the Chi Omega Sorority. Before completing her studies, Gloria left KU to wed Roger at the Naval Academy in June of 1951.
Gloria will always be remembered for her love of music and her gift for teaching as she supported Roger in each of his career postings around the world and creating new pianists wherever she lived. For many years, Gloria was the resident organist at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church on Fleming Island, and many will remember her for her music at weddings, funerals and Christmas services, in the old church.
Gloria was a longtime resident of Old Church Road in historic Hibernia, Florida. She and Roger were founding members of the Club Continental in Orange Park. Their attendance at Sunday brunch was a weekly event and something they both cherished and looked forward to without fail.
Gloria, along with Roger were proud members of the Master Gardeners and her love of flowers and hatred for weeds, carried throughout her later years.
Those who knew Gloria, could only respect and love her for her caring and loving nature. Even in her later years with Alzheimer’s, she always wanted to help those in need in her memory care, San Jose Gardens, even when she was not capable of still lending a helping hand.
Gloria was loved and respected by many people and her passing leaves a large void in the community as well as in the hearts of all the people whose lives she has touched over the years. Rest in peace and thank you for all you’ve done to make the world a happier, more caring place.
