Harold Francis Hobbs

August 23, 1935 — May 5, 2020

Harold Francis Hobbs, 84, of Green Cove Springs, FL, was born in Ault, CO to Francis and Dorothy (England) Hobbs on August 23, 1935 and lived in Fort Morgan, CO until he joined the Navy at age 17 and where he traveled around the world by age 18. He loved the Navy and served his country faithfully for 20 years until he retired as a Chief Boatswain’s Mate.

After the Navy he worked many other jobs also retiring as a Scalemaster for Conagra Feed Mill in Jacksonville, FL.

Harold was a legendary storyteller who loved to talk about all his adventures growing up and serving in the Navy. He could talk for hours and never tell the same story twice. He was also known for his wit and great sense of humor. Always cheerful and willing to help anyone in need.

Survived by his loving faithful wife of 62 years, Mary Leona Sweat whom he met while stationed at the Navy Base in Green Cove Springs. Three children, Kathy Kenna (Ron) of Orlando, FL, Diana Bailey (George) of Middleburg, FL and Lisa Burkey Mitchelson (Rob) of Dunnellon, FL; three grandchildren, Nick Burkey of Newberry, FL, Jill Kenna of Key West, FL and Alex Burkey of Gainesville, FL; one step-grandchild, Logan Mitchelson of LaCrosse, FL; sister, Jean “Sis” Denes of Sterling, CO; many nieces, nephews and cousins as well.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Jacksonville, FL and attended faithfully until his health prevented it. Harold touched many lives through the years and was loved by many. Besides storytelling, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren who lovingly called him, Papa, Pop and Big P.

He was the best husband, daddy and Papa a family could ever ask for and our hearts are broken with his passing. While we know he is in Heaven making things ready for us to all be together again, we miss him more than words can express.

He died very unexpectantly on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Middleburg, FL.

Family will be having a private memorial service for him on Monday and afterward he will be cremated per his wishes.
