Herb passed away July 08, 2018 in the Moosehaven Health Care Center at the age of 84. He was born to Glenn and Hazel Lewis on November 12, 1933 in Martinsville, VA. After attending college, Herb worked as a Naval Architect, assigned to the Design division of a large Naval shipyard. Upon leaving government service, he was involved in the scrapping of WWII fleet submarines and an aircraft carrier.
Herb married Edith Lewis on December 29, 1956. He and Edie moved to Florida in 1966, settling in Ponte Vedra Beach before moving to Jacksonville, Beach, FL. They had a son, Glenn (deceased) and a daughter Christine. During this time, Herb owned his own corporation and was also a licensed boat Captain conducting fishing and sightseeing tours. After semi-retiring, Herb bought a fish camp that became a family business. He sold the fish camp in 2000 and began to enjoy life, traveling extensively with Edie.
Herb became affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose on March 30, 1974 when he joined the Jacksonville Bch., FL. Lodge #1558. He was a member of the J. Wendell Fargis Masonic Lodge, Neptune Bch., FL., as well as a member of the Beaches Shrine Club. Herb and Edie moved to Moosehaven on April 20, 2010 where they resided for 8 years. Edie preceded Herb in death on June 26, 2014. Herb was very active during his time at Moosehaven, where he enjoyed fishing, playing Bingo and working in the woodshop. He enjoyed playing jokes and leaves behind many friends with fond memories of good times!
Herb is survived by his daughter Christine Largent of Jacksonville, FL., four grandchildren, Harless (Audrey), Ryan, Danielle (Brent), Michelle, four great-children, a brother Thomas Lewis (Grace) and a sister Glenna Ohlms (Dan) both of Virginia.
Memorial Service held July 19, 2018 at 1:00 pm in the Moosehaven Chapel, conducted by Rev. Helen Taylor, Officers of Opportunity Lodge, Members of J. Wendell Fargis Masonic Lodge, and Military Honors presented by the United States Army.
