Jack Purtee, aged 97, died peacefully in his sleep on August 22, 2022. Jack was a career Naval officer who served in World War II as an aerial gunner in the Pacific theater. Jack joined the Navy alongside his best friend, Bob Bohnstengel and, after 30 years of service, retired alongside Bob as well. While in basic training Jack met Louise Gallop, who was working in a shop in Weatherford, Oklahoma. When the war ended, they were married and remained together until his death. They shared 77 years of marriage. They had two children, Anna and Bill. Of the many naval stations at which Jack served, the favorite of both Jack and Louise was Midway Island. They enjoyed the beach, sun, albatrosses and the small community feel of the island. After his retirement, Jack and Louise traveled extensively. They purchased a home in the Florida Keys where they spent half the year boating and fishing. Jack was always working on one project or another. He was a skilled wood worker and created such things as toys and tables and folding stools. Jack could be stubborn and had his opinions, but he was generous and made many friends throughout his life. Jack is survived by his wife, Louise; their children Anna and Bill; and grandchildren Eric and Adam. The family will receive friends at 10:00am on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 in the Moosehaven Chapel and funeral services will start at 11:00am. Burial at Jacksonville National Cemetery with military honors will be held the following day, Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 11:00am.
