James Albert Hirsch, 73, of Lake Asbury, Florida passed away on Friday, February 7th, 2020. He was born to Philip R Hirsch and Margaret Elizabeth Biss on June 20th, 1946 at Mitchel Army Airfield in Garden City, New York. He graduated from Carle Place High School and was a traditionally trained Butcher and Meat Cutter for over 40 years. For a majority of his life, Jim was heavily involved with Civil Air Patrol, the Auxiliary of the United States Air Force He loved working with the Cadets, training and mentoring anyone he could, and leading many Search and Rescue Missions. James was a Squadron Commander for the Col. Francis S Gabreski Squadron VI for 12 years and helped send many cadets to higher learning and successful military careers. He commanded some of the largest bivouacs in Civil Air Patrol’s history and even became the Deputy Commander of Long Island Group. Rising to the eventual rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Jim helped educate and train hundreds of people in Search and Rescue, leadership, and military history. A lifelong Yankees and Giants fan, he was fortunate and happy to witness his teams win multiple championships in his lifetime. An avid golfer for most of his life, Jim played in amateur tournaments multiple times and helped many people learn and improve their game. James was also a proud member of Masonic Lodge No 1134 in Smithtown, NY and the congregation at Fellowship Bible Church in Middleburg, FL. Preceded in death by his sister Roberta Donahue. Survived by his brother Philip Paul Hirsch, his former wife Ellen Hirsch, his son Michael Samuel Hirsch, his daughter-in-law Christina Marie Hirsch, and his adored granddaughter Lilianna Juliet Hirsch. Viewing on Tuesday, February 11th from 6:00-8:00 PM in the Broadus-Raines Chapel. Pastor Gary of the Fellowship Bible Church will be officiating at 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Jim’s favorite charity, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, in his name and memory.
