Surrounded by his family, James “Jimmy” Albert Morris, 73, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2024, after a valiant 11-year battle with kidney disease. Originally from Anniston, Alabama, he was born August 24, 1951, to the late Clarence and Frances (nee Hughes) Morris. He graduated from Anniston High School in 1969 and attended Snead College, but his heart belonged to Auburn University. Jim spent his career as a construction superintendent for McWhorter Construction Company and traveled all over the US building retail and commercial centers. He and his life partner, Judy, called Wedgefield, in Orlando, Florida, home for almost 25 years before recently moving to the Jacksonville area to be close to their children and grandchildren.
In high school, Jim was an accomplished swimmer and diver and loved playing football. He was a proud Boy Scout and achieved the level of Eagle Scout. As a young man, he spent many years traveling the Western United States and was immersed in the Navajo Native American way of life alongside his sister, brother-in-law and nephews, as his brother-in-law, Johnny, was full blooded Navajo. It was there Jim developed a great love for Native American culture and art, which he carried with him throughout his life.
Jimmy was an avid golfer and member of Wedgefield Golf Club where he played 3-4 times a week and developed many friendships there. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, chess, a good game of poker, riding his Harley Davidson, watching crime TV and his beloved Auburn Tigers. War Damn Eagle! He loved grilling and he turned “laying a fire” into an art form. His standing rib roast was legendary. He most enjoyed spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Basil “Johnny” Hubbell, Sr.; nephews Frank Hubbell and Richard “Rick” Hubbell; Rick’s wife, Lee Ann Hubbell; great niece, Sarah Beth Hubbell Schulz; and brothers Joe Weaver, Sr., and Donnie Weaver.
He is survived by his loving life partner, Judy Whiteman; stepchildren Jennifer (Lee) Fields and Edwin (Leah) Whiteman; grandchildren Justin Stauffer, Josh (Ashley) Stauffer, Connor Fields and Grace Fields; great grandchildren Elynora and Marley Stauffer; nephews Ken (Carole) Hubbell, Scott (Liz) Hubbell, Basil Hubbell, Jr., and Joey Weaver, Jr.; great nieces and nephews Meghan (Travis) Proctor, Whitney Hubbell, Tara Hubbell, Rory (Donnelle) Hubbell, Christopher Hubbell, Allison Hubbell, Barbara Hubbell, James Hubbell, Frankie Hubbell, Deidra (Tyson) Sterrett, Ryan (Rikki) Hubbell, Lindsey (Chaz) Avery, Basil Hubbell III; and many great-great nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 9, 2024 in the Broadus-Raines Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Haven Hospice Custead Care Center, Orange Park, Florida, where he was well cared for in his last days, or to the National Kidney Foundation.
