James Daniel "Dan" Lewis, Jr., 83 of Jacksonville, FL passed away May 2nd, 2019 surrounded by his family. Dan was born to James Daniel and Marguerite Bell Lewis on May 23, 1935 in Conway, South Carolina. He graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He also graduated from the Hospital Management program at Duke University, now part of the Fuqua School of Business.
He was married to the love of his life, Marilyn (Lyn) Hitchcock Lewis, for 53 years. He had two children, Caroline Lewis Stake and James (Jim) Daniel Lewis III. Caroline and her husband, Ian, have two sons, Chandler Lewis Stake and Harrison Paul Stake. Jim and his wife, Katie, have a daughter, Chloe Lyn Lewis, and a son, Daniel Braden Lewis. Dan was devoted to his family and was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He took great joy from all of his grandchildren.
Dan moved to Florida from South Carolina for a job at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida and built many friendships there that lasted the rest of his life. Dan held many roles at the Company and after 25 years of dedicated service, he left the Company as Senior Vice President of Operations. Dan also worked for Coastal Emergency Services prior to his retirement, but was an entrepreneur at many times during his life. Dan made significant investments in real estate and had an auto broker business in his retirement years.
Dan attended Riverside Park United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and was instrumental in guiding the construction and oversight of the Riverside Park Apartments.
Dan is survived by Lyn, Caroline, Ian, Harrison, Chandler, Jim, Katie, Chloe and Daniel, all of Jacksonville, FL. A memorial service to be conducted by his pastor, Emily Knight, will be at Riverside Park United Methodist Church on May 25, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dan’s name to Riverside Park United Methodist Church.
