Jerry Thomas Walker passed away on November 16, 2023 at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents David and Lawrence, his brother David Walker, his son William (Billy) Walker and his grandson Jason Spivey. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marla (Binns) Walker, their children Sharon Linquist (Perry), Michael Walker (Debbie), & Carolyn Akes (David), their grandchildren Michelle Spivey, Kristin Vance, Christopher Walker & Kim Carter, and their seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Karen Rogero (Paul), nieces, great-nieces, and a great-nephew. Family was very important to Jerry, and he cherished the time spent with them. Jerry was born in McComb, Mississippi. As a young boy, his family relocated to California where they lived with his brother, and he was raised with his nieces Betsy and Ann. When in high school, Jerry enlisted in the US Navy, which turned into a 20-year career. In 1962, while attached to VP-19, he represented his squadron as a pitcher in the Navy Softball League when they competed in the Navy National Softball Tournament. He was a proud plank owner in VA-82 and had two deployments to Vietnam aboard the USS America and the USS Coral Sea. After retirement from the Navy, Jerry worked at NADEP (NAS JAX) in the Quality Assurance Department and retired after 23 years. Altogether, Jerry proudly served his country for 43 years. He often said, “If age and health wasn't a factor... I would do it all again.” Jerry and Marla were fortunate to be able to travel in their RV, visiting many National Parks including the annual trip to the Great Smoky Mountains to see the colors. He enjoyed planning trips almost as much as taking them. They traveled occasionally with their grandchildren, the great-grandchildren, and their nieces. The children were always treated to Jerry's world-famous silver dollar pancakes. Jerry was an avid golfer, having a love-hate relationship with the game, but seldom turned down the opportunity to play. He will be honored with a military ceremony at Jacksonville National Cemetery on November 30, 2023 at 10:30am.
