Jo Ann Schell Berg

September 27, 1928 — March 11, 2021

Jo Ann Schell Berg, 92, of Penney Farms FL, went to be with her Creator, her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on March 11, 2021. She was born to Joseph and Ann Hawkins Schell on September 27, 1928 in Orville CA, was raised in San Jose CA, and was the youngest of three children. She met her future husband, Clayton Berg, while attending Culter Academy in Los Angeles CA, from which she graduated in 1946. Jo Ann attended Westmont College in Santa Barbara CA before completing her diploma to become a registered nurse at West Suburban School of Nursing, Oak Park IL, graduating with the class of 1950.

Jo Ann married Clayton Berg on Dec 22, 1950 in California and was blessed to have one son and two daughters. She practiced nursing in Texas, Illinois, Costa Rica, and Florida.

She had an interest in sewing, knitting, and cross-stitching in her earlier years, and she added weaving in her later years. Reading and working puzzles were also a great source of enjoyment for her.

She loved her Lord and served Him as a wife, mother, missionary, nurse, and hostess to others in her home. Jo Ann taught Sunday School in Costa Rica and served as a board member at Kendall Christian School in Miami FL. Jo Ann was an active member of Grace Anglican Church, Fleming Island FL, and she participated in various bible studies and prayer groups at her church and at Penney Retirement Community where she was a resident for 29 years.

Jo Ann has been described as being a good listener by her friends and mentors, and she was known to have exhibited the traits of the noble wife of Proverbs 31 – she was industrious, she extended her hands to the needy, she spoke with great wisdom and faithful instruction, and her husband and her children call her blessed.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Maribeth Schell Robinson, and her brother, Harold Schell.

Jo Ann is survived by her husband Clayton Berg of Penney Farms FL, her son Stephen Berg of Arlington VA, her daughter Catherine Berg Greig (married to Gary) of Aliso Viejo CA, and her daughter Joan Berg Yoder (married to Ron) of Lincoln NE. She is also survived by her four grandchildren—Kristen Yoder Strom (married to William), Jonathan Greig, Rivkah Greig, Michael Yoder—and by her two great-grandchildren—Angus Strom and Duncan Strom. Jo Ann is also survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara Berg Olivas (married to Robert) and by ten nieces and nephews—Donald Schell, Nanette Schell Notor, Peter Schell, Melinda Schell, David Robinson, Carol Robinson Middleton, Martha Robinson Wood, Jack Robinson, Carrie Olivas Kuliev, and Craig Olivas.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Anglican Church in Fleming Island, FL, on Friday March 26, 2021, at 2:00pm, followed by a graveside service at Penney Farms Cemetery in Green Cove Springs, FL.
