John “Jack” Diebold was a compassionate husband, legendary father to many, not only a grandfather but a great great “Papa”, servant, brother and friend. He left this world on April 6, 2022 at the age of 88 surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.
Jack was born to William Howard and Stella Diebold on May 12, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. He was drafted into the Army and served from May 1953 to April 1955 in the Korean War as part of antiaircraft artillery crew member.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Jack. He loved to play golf and fish but most of all enjoyed his grandchildren whenever possible. Jack was self- employed as a painter contractor for more than 45 years. As a devout Catholic, he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister, assisting the priest in administering the sacraments of holy communion.
He has been affiliated with the Loyal Order of Moose since 1974 when he joined Waukegan, Illinois Lodge #706. Always willing to help, Jack became the administrator for the Waukegan, Illinois Lodge and served for 12 years. He received his Fellowship degree in 1980 and his Pilgrim degree in 1986 and was Illinois Moose Association Legionnaire of the Year 2008-2009. When Waukegan Lodge closed in 2011, he transferred to Zion, Illinois Lodge #667. Jack was a born leader and enjoyed participating in many activities that increased membership and raised money for causes that were philanthropic related to both Moosehaven and Mooseheart.
Later in their lives both Jack and Evelyn came to Moosehaven on January 15, 2013 where they lived for 9 years. His caring wife, Evelyn preceded him in death on June 9, 2020.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at 11:00 AM at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, 1649 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, Florida 32073. Entombment to follow at Moosehaven Mausoleum.
Jack is survived by his brother, Thomas (Annette) Diebold of Wisconsin, son, Robert (Cheryl) of Florida, daughter Victoria (Kevin) Smedegard of Illinois, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. His cheerful attitude and bright smile will be missed by all.
