Larry Edward Giggey, Sr., passed away on December 27, 2017, in Orange Park, Florida. He was fighting cancer and chemotherapy, which was further complicated by the loss of his wife of 49 years just a few months prior.
He was born in Freeport, Maine, to his parents Eldrid LeRoy Giggey and Harriet Frances Savage Giggey on June 1, 1945, the 5th out of six children, and he is survived by his sister Donaline Chodorow who lives in Columbus. Ohio, and sister Pamela Stevenson, who lives in Danforth, Maine.
He joined the Navy early in life and worked as a Aviation Machinist’s Mate on aircraft engines. He had logged over 5000 hours as a Flight Engineer on P-3 ASW aircraft and with a military career that spans 20 years, he had made friends all over the country, some of which remained in contact until his demise.
Following his military career he worked in civil service as a jet mechanic, in which he made even more friends throughout the industry. Many of his civil service friends joined with him in some of the many fraternal organizations he was involved in.
After a 20 year military career and a 30 year civil service career, he finally retired after having served 50 years of government service, and was even recognized at his retirement by the Secretary of the Navy for this accomplishment. He had earned the respect and admiration of all of his coworkers.
He was happily married to Margaret Giggey, whom he met near his hometown of Yarmouth, Maine, as she was from Portland. Throughout their marriage Larry and Margaret endured many struggles, being it from having little means as a young couple, to the absence of each other’s company due to deployments. But through thick and thin, they thrived throughout their 49 year marriage and set many milestones and examples for their offspring to follow.
Among his many accomplishments are his fraternal connections. He was most humbly proud to be a Mason and a Shriner, and he had numerous affiliations with many more organizations. To name a few: The VFW, The Fraternal Order of Eagles, the American Legion, and the Fleet Reserve. He was also a volunteer at the Clay County Sheriff’s office. But most of all, he enjoyed being a Shriner. From his first Shrine club affiliation at the Clay County Shrine Club to his creating the Morocco Thunder NASCAR themed parade unit, he has taken great pride in knowing that his efforts have helped crippled and burned children and their families by fundraising for Shriner’s Hospitals, and raising awareness of Freemasonry and what it is to be a Shriner to everyday people who don’t know what the fraternity is all about.
He will always be remembered and cherished by all who have crossed paths with him, especially his children whom he is survived by, Larry Edward Giggey, Jr., Kevin Drew Giggey, And Javone Renee Tosun, and all his granddaughters from all three of his children. He was very proud of his kids and their respective families.
He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his brothers Edlrid Giggey Jr. and Gary Giggey, and Barbara Fowler, his sister.
