Leroy Scott

May 30, 1939 — November 25, 2023

Leroy “Roy” Scott (84), passed away on November 25, 2023.  He was born on May 30, 1939, in Dillon, South Carolina; the son of sharecroppers and grew up very poor.  After high school graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy where he spent 21 years and retired from the U.S. Navy as a Chief Warrant Officer, grade W4.  After his naval career, he attended the University of Florida where he majored in Management Information Systems.  After graduation, he began working for Barnett Banks and he continued with them until it was merged into Bank of America.  He retired from Bank of America in 2002 as Vice President of Global Financial Systems.

In his banking career he helped bring Barnett into the era of Satellite Transmission of electronic transactions and he developed fraud prevention systems that are still in use today.

A man of humble beginnings, he loved God, his family and his country.  He spent most of his retirement playing golf and enjoying his grandchildren.  He was “Papa” and they were “Papa’s Sweeties” and he loved them very much.  He always told each of them “Wherever you are or wherever you go, you will always be Papa’s sweetie”.  He was a Sunday school teacher, Deacon and was the chairman of the building committee to rebuild Island View Baptist Church after it was destroyed by fire.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Barbara; sons, Kenneth and Charles and his wife, Misty; grandchildren, Kaley and her husband, Chad, Hannah, Josephine “Joey”, Taylor, River; and 2 great grandchildren, Nichole and Gavin.

He will be laid to rest at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
