Margaret "Peggy" McPherson Johnson

February 18, 1922 — November 6, 2018

An ardent crusader for home and family, voracious reader, community volunteer and consummate baby hugger, Margaret “Peggy” McPherson Johnson passed away on November 6, 2018 and entered her eternal life with her Savior. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Dr. C Paul Johnson, her daughter, Sharon Mills, her parents, her brother and her son-in-law, Jim Montague. Surviving are her daughters, Nancy Munn (Jerry), Kristin Brett (David) and Joan Montague; son, Jeff Johnson (April); grandchildren, Jennifer Kincaid (Don), Kristin Whaley (Jason), Jonathan Brett (Alison), Alix Brett, John Montague, Molly Montague, Betsy Johnson and great-grandchildren, Christy Kincaid, Layla Kincaid, Kimberly Kincaid, Riley Brett, Fennic Montague and Barrett Whaley.
Prior to her marriage, Peggy was educated at Iowa State University and employed by the Clinton Foods Company as a chemist in the research department. After her marriage to Paul, she was the ideal “Navy wife”. There were moves to Oakland, CA, Bethesda, MD, Memphis, TN, the Canal Zone in Panama, the Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD, Key West, FL, Bethesda, MD and Jacksonville, FL, where Paul retired from the Navy.
Everywhere they were transferred, Peggy was involved with her children’s education; a home room mother to support each of her 5 children’s teachers, a Girl Scout Leader, a Little League mother, a substitute teacher and a swimming instructor. She was always a willing volunteer at schools and sports activities. Peggy was an active member of the Ortega United Methodist Church with the Altar Guild, as a Sunday School teacher and a church office volunteer worker. She volunteered for a number of civic organizations in Jacksonville, including Board membership in the Children’s Home Society, the Women’s Club, and the Garden Club. When in their 90’s, she and Paul were still looking out for those less fortunate and for several years, delivered Meals on Wheels together. Peggy enjoyed playing tennis, bridge and being with friends and family. In recent years, she enjoyed her many friends at The Windsor. The family is forever grateful for the excellent care she received from Windsor staff, Hospice and caregiver and friend Sharon Hill.
