Mavis Allen Dobson

February 21, 1930 — December 2, 2018

Mavis Allen Dobson, 88, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on December 2, 2018 at Haven Hospice in Orange Park, Florida after a short illness.

Mavis was born on February 21, 1930 in Four Oaks, North Carolina to the late Jasper Joel Allen and Florence Mae Allen. Mavis was the fourth of eight children and was raised on the family farm. She graduated from Four Oaks High School in 1948 and Watts School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina in 1952. While in nursing school Mavis met her future husband, Ernest Dobson, a student at North Carolina State University and they became engaged on her 24th birthday.  Mavis and Ernie were married on September 5, 1954 at Lee’s Chapel Church in Four Oaks.

Shortly after marriage Mavis moved to southeastern Pennsylvania. She lived in Delaware County or Chester County for the next 60 years except for two years in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In 2015 she moved to Fleming Island, Florida to be closer to her family.

Mavis and Ernie were the proud and loving parents of two sons, Ernest Jr. (Chip) and Andrew. Mavis was also a loving wife, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be dearly missed by all.  Mavis had a passion for golf, bridge and reading.  She was a volunteer at Chester County Hospital for over 25 years. Mavis worked as a Registered Nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital in Chester during the 1960’s and for many years after as a private duty nurse. Mavis was a member of Radley Run Country Club for over 50 years and she had a home there for 30 years. She never tired of watching the activity on the third green from her kitchen window. Mavis was very active in the Ladies Golf program and she enjoyed cross-stitching the names of golf tournament winners onto the award plaques.  For many years Mavis and special friend and neighbor Jean Noyes had a daily happy hour.

Mavis is survived by her son Chip (wife Rhonda); grandchildren Lauren Todd (husband Mark), Jacqueline Dobson, Caitlin Dobson and Eric Dobson; great grandson Mark Andrew Todd; sister Norma Jackson; brothers in law Billy Wiggs and Mac Dobson (wife Elsa); sister in law Dorothy Allen and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie, in 1982 and her son, Andy, in 2014. She was also predeceased by her sisters Christine, Dot, and Elgie and brothers Newitt, Ray, and Leroy.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am,  Friday, December 14, 2018 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church, 4020 Concord Road Aston, Pennsylvania 19104. Mavis will be buried next to her husband at Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.
