Maxine Cowles passed away on August 15, 2018 at her home in Fleming Island, FL. She was born in Wayne Township, Greene County, PA on September 23, 1938 to John L. Garrison and Emma Maxine (Henderson) Garrison.
After graduating from high school she went to Washington, DC where she was employed by the C&P Telephone Co., the Foreign Service at the State Department where she had assignments in London, England, Chile, South America, the United Nations in New York City, Somalia and Nigeria, Africa and finished her career with Glaxo in Research Triangle Park, Raleigh, NC.
Maxine met and married Kenneth Cowles while working for the State Department in Nigeria, Africa in 1973 and they parted ways in 1980. She retired and moved to Eagle Harbor in Fleming Island, FL about 1994 where she enjoyed spending her time gardening, swimming, biking and reading. Maxine met Martin Tompkins while working for Glaxo in Raleigh, NC and they were married after moving to Fleming Island.
She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Garrison and her husband, Martin Tompkins. Maxine is survived by her sisters, Marjorie Miller from Waynesburg, PA and Ruth Halverson from Lewes, DE along with Marjorie’s children, Denise, John and Brian.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
