Nelson R Corby, Jr.

December 23, 1947 — April 1, 2018

Nelson R. Corby, Jr., age 70, died April 1, from multiple myeloma. Nelson was a Gentleman and a Scholar.  He will be missed by his wife of 41 years, Jane; daughter, Elizabeth; son, Matthew and daughter-in-law, Lynn; and grandchildren, Mason, Samantha and Tyler; brother, Michael; and his many friends and family.

Nelson was born in Paterson, New Jersey.  He graduated from Rutgers University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Doctor of Engineering Degree.  After working for RCA Research Laboratories in Princeton, NJ, he spent his career as a Scientist in the GE Research Center in Schenectady, NY, where he worked on numerous projects, supporting the Aircraft Engines, Medical, and Power Systems groups.  During his time at GE, Nelson was awarded 50 U.S. patents for his work in robotic vision for inspection and welding, real-time tracking in radiological procedures, magnetic noise filtering, reducing x-ray dosages during fluoroscopic exams, light detectors for the 3D camera, magnetic source imaging, and real-time acquisition and archiving of time-sampled signals.

Nelson is a member of the National Speleological Society, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the GE Elfun Society where he worked to modify toys for disabled children.

Nelson looked forward to his yearly trips to Colorado each September.  He and his friend, Rich, hiked the 49er's for over 25 years together, eventually sharing the trail experience with their sons.  Nelson enjoyed repairing antique clocks and pianos, any travel adventure and learning new things.  He had boundless curiosity and loved learning the details of how things work. But he most enjoyed the time spent with family and friends.  Nelson carried a wealth of knowledge and it was his joy to share it with everyone.  He was a true Renaissance man.

Contributions may be made in his name to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) at 383 Main Ave, 5th Floor, Norwalk, CT 06851 or on-line.  Contributions may also be made to the Haven Hospice, 745 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL 32065.
