Robin Whitaker Turner

January 12, 1944 — January 20, 2023

Robin W. Turner passed away peacefully, on January 20, after a long battle with LewyBody dementia, at Penney Farms Retirement Community, Florida.  He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather as well as a loving friend and mentor to many.  Rob was born in Cooperstown, NY, on January 12, 1944.  He was the son of the late James E. Turner and Helen W. Greene.  He grew up in Edmeston, NY and graduated from Edmeston Central School, in June 1962.  He furthered his education at SUNY Delhi, the University of Denver and received his masters at FIU.

 

Rob and his family moved to Hobart in 1972.  He taught courses in Hotel and Restaurant Management at his Alma mater, Delhi, for 32 years.  He was very community oriented, serving as President of the South Kortright school board, he represented the town of Stamford on the Delaware County Board of Supervisors for 12 years and he was a member of the Stamford Golf Course board.

 

Rob holds the distinction of being inducted twice to the SUNY Delhi Athletic Hall of Fame for being on the first soccer team and for being an outstanding athlete his years at Delhi.

 

He married Hilda Stewart on September 1, 2001.  After retiring, they spent time traveling and wintering in Texas and Florida. When Rob wasn’t at a golf course, he could be found outdoors making beautiful flower beds.  He enjoyed hosting gatherings for family and friends.

 

Rob is survived by his wife, Hilda; daughter, Holly McConnell; son, Anthony Turner; stepsons, Damon (Nicole) Stewart; Jay ((Edith) Stewart and nine grandchildren.  Also, stepmother Dee Turner and half-sister Tonya (William)Blair, a niece and two nephews and many special cousins.

 

Rob was predeceased by his daughter, Heather Turner, his brother, James E. Turner and his half-sister, Tammy Turner.

 

A Celebration of Rob’s life is planned for August 2023. 

 

Donations in Robin’s name may be made to the LewyBody Dementia Assoc., Heart of the Catskills Humane Society, Delhi NY, or SUNY Delhi Hospitality Management scholarship fund.
