Roy Kneeburg, Jr. Obituary
Roy Kneeburg, Jr. 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday April 2,2023 in the arms of Jesus. He was born on January 29th, 1932, to Roy Brown Kneeburg, Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth Kneeburg in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The family settled in Asheville, NC where Roy grew up. He graduated from Lee Edwards High School, and then attended two years of college before joining the Air Force in 1951 during the Korean War. While in the Air Force, he served in England and trained to be an air traffic controller.
Upon discharge from the Air Force in 1955, Roy was hired by the FAA and eventually landed in Jacksonville Florida working at the old Imeson Airport. During his time there, he was introduced to the love of his life Frances Commander through his co-worker Bill Commander. After a brief time of a long-distance relationship, Roy and Frances were married on September 3, 1960.
Roy later transferred to the Jacksonville FAA Center in Hilliard where he worked until his retirement in 1985. During his retirement years, Roy enjoyed painting, traveling with his wife, square dancing, building sailboats and cabinets and meticulously maintaining his cars. He also enjoyed working as an usher at First Baptist Church Orange Park, FL.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Don Kneeburg (KD). He is survived by his loving wife Frances, Sister Betty Thompson (Huntsville, AL), Son Terry Kneeburg (Lori) Cumming, GA, Daughter Kay Cannady (Mike) Green Cove Springs, FL, and Son Kevin Kneeburg (Elvia), Hurst, Texas along with grandchildren, Andrew (Angela), Austin, Carson, Nathan, Nick, Rachel, Phoebe, Leila, and a greatgrandchild, Faith.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Friday, April 21, 2023, from 6-8 pm at the Broadus Raines Chapel, 501 Spring Street, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043.
A graveside service will be held Saturday April 22, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Jacksonville Memory Gardens, 111 Blanding Blvd, Orange Park, FL 32073.
