Steven Lee Hammond, 57, Green Cove Springs, FL, passed away on October 2, 2020.
Steven was born on March 6, 1963 to James Russell Hammond and Rosalie Eleanor Kaminski.
Steven attended Batavia High School in Batavia, IL. He also attended Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL. He was a proud member of the US Marines Second Division (1981-1987) serving at Camp Butler in Okinawa, Japan and Camp Lejeune, NC, leaving the service as a Lance Corporal.
Steven was an active member of the United States Veteran Reserve Corps with the rank of Corporal. The US-VRC honored him with the Distinguished Service Ribbon posthumously.
He was a member of the Cherokee of Georgia, where he received his Native American name, Strong Buffalo. When Steven moved to Green Cove Springs, he served as Historian for All Creations Inter-Tribal Native American Community, participating in the Clay County History Festival, Native American history presentation at Lake Asbury Jr. High, and the All Creations Intertribal Powwow.
He is survived by his son, Gregory Hammond of Heidelberg, Germany, two sisters, Debra Vermace and Armandina Garza, and one brother, Allan Rodisch, his niece and nephew, Cassandra and James, as well as numerous cousins and other relatives.
Interment will be in early November (date and time to be determined) at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.
