Capt. Thomas James Spencer USN (Retired) passed away peacefully at home on August 22, 2021. Tom was born on January 22, 1936 to William (Bill) and Katherine (Kitty) Spencer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Tom grew up in Le Sueur, Minnesota, home of the “Jolly Green Giant”. He graduated from high school in 1954 and joined the United States Navy in 1956. Tom completed his flight training and was commissioned an Ensign, USNR and received his Navy Wings of Gold in 1958. Tom completed his distinguished military career after 27 years in 1983. He continued to work for various government contractors supporting the S-3A/S-3B VS community until he finally retired in 2000. Tom loved golfing, fishing and telling “sea stories”. He was a member of the American Legion Post #137 Tom is preceded in death by former wife of 54 years, Patricia A Spencer, Father William B Spencer and Mother Katherine F Spencer. Tom is survived by his wife of 7 years, Jo Ann Spencer, Jacksonville, FL children Michael (Mike) Spencer (Irene) Jacksonville, FL, William (Bill) Spencer (Tina) Woodstock, GA, Kim M Little (Chris) MacClenny, FL, Patrick (Pat) Spencer (Renae) Acworth, GL, step-son Chad Lowery, Jacksonville, FL. One sister, Katherine (Kit) Beutz (John) Minneapolis, MN. Grandchildren, Christopher, Kenneth (Portia), Jessica (Jonny) Ryan (Lindzie) Evan, Kevin (Elise) Jordan and Thomas, Step Grandchildren Kiah, Ryan and Xander. 10 great grandchildren, 4 step great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Tom will be interred at the Jacksonville National Cemetery at 11:30am Tuesday, September 7, 2021. A memorial/reception will be held following service at the American Legion Post #137. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Legion.
