Valta Lavern Brookman Voulgaris

VALTA LAVERNE BROOKMAN VOULGARIS, better known to her family and friends as “Val” went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on May 5, 2017. She was residing with her daughter and son-in-law in Fleming Island, Florida at the time of her death.  Prior to moving to Florida she was a long time resident of Wharton, Texas. Val was born November 22, 1925 in Burkburnett, Texas to Fred and Grace Brookman.  She graduated from John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in 1946.  That is where she met Dennis Voulgaris and they married on March 17, 1946 in Waco, Texas.  After Denny’s discharge from the Army after World War II they moved to Wharton where they made their home and raised their four children: Chris, Pat, Debbie & David.  Val was preceded in death by her husband, who died in June, 2001, her parents and her brother Jim.  She is survived by her children: son Chris and his wife Cynthia, son Pat, daughter Debbie and her husband Bob and son David and his wife Linda.  She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter. Val was a long-time member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church where she served in many capacities: Altar Guild, Blue Apron Team, Sunday School Teacher, as a member of the Daughters of the King and working for many years in the St. Thomas Thrift Store. Val will be especially remembered for her love of the game of bridge and playing tennis.  Mostly she will be remembered for her love of dear friends, family, the people of Wharton and her cats, each one in succession named “Purlee.”  Val was always ready to help out anyone that she knew was in need. The Voulgaris family is grateful for the wonderful care she received by the staff at Elmcroft in Wharton and by the staff of Haven Hospice in Fleming Island, Florida. Memorial services will be held in Fleming Island on May 12, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Anglican Church and in Wharton, Texas on May 28, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
