May 6, 1931 — April 23, 2023

CDR Robert R. Miller, U. S. Navy (ret.) Bob was born to Ruth and Ray Miller in Louisville KY in 1931. He was an Eagle Scout and Sea Scout. For education he earned a bachelor’s and 3 master’s degrees in engineering and industrial management from the University of Louisville, (NROTC scholarship), the Naval Post Graduate School at Monterey, CA and Central Michigan University. During his career in the United States Navy, he served on a destroyer escort, 4 submarines, an ammunition ship in Vietnam, and an aircraft carrier. His shore tours were at the Fleet Ballistic Missile Training Center and at Naval Ships Systems command in Washington D. C. where he helped establish the Navy’s pollution abatement program. In retirement, he worked 20 years in ship design for such ships as the Spruance class destroyers, the Ticonderoga class cruisers, and even a prison ship for the city of NY. He retired as a Vice President of M. Rosenblatt and Son, Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. In civilian life, Bob was a scout master, a church vestryman, president of a civic group, a Shriner (Commander of the Legion of Honor), Shriners Hospital supporter, life member of the United States Submarine Veterans organization, an avid reader, a music lover and the first male President of the Orange Park Garden Club. He was a world traveler, visiting over 30 countries and taking over 25 cruises. Bob was married to, and survived by Mary, the love of his life for over 70 years. They moved 30 times, lived up and down both coasts of the US and spent the last 30 years in Fleming Island. He was the proud father of 3 sons, Mark (Julia), Bruce (Barbara), and Brian (Sue), 9 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. His boys all followed in his footsteps as Naval Engineers. A Communion Service will be held at St Mark’s Episcopal Church in Jacksonville on Tuesday May 2nd at 2:00pm. An Interment with Military Honors will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery on Wednesday May 3rd at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers a donation to Shriners Hospitals, his favorite charity, is gratefully accepted.
