Edith Laverne Cook

December 28, 1931 — September 26, 2022

Edith Laverne Cook, 90 years old of Doctors Inlet, Florida, passed gently from the arms of her family into the arms of Jesus on September 26, 2022.  She was born to Sam Newberry and Minnie Adell Cleveland on December 28, 1931, in Newton, Georgia.

She married D. F. Cook on December 7, 1952, and retired from Flint River Textiles in Albany, Georgia.  She was a member and baptized at County Line Baptist Church in Baker County, Georgia.  She also was very involved with the VFW in Albany, Georgia.

Laverne loved her family, the outdoors, working in her garden and flowers.  She was an avid reader and was most happy while reading almost anything, especially the Almanac.

She will be remembered for her spitfire, “tell it like it is” personality.  She loved being around people who treasured her honesty.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Marvin Newberry and Lamar Newberry and sisters Juanita Lunger and Shirley Gibson.

She is survived by her daughter, Hilda Joyce Dukes of Doctors Inlet, Florida, her granddaughter, Misty Sawdo (Chris) of Middleburg, Florida, Great Grandson, Hunter Sawdo of Middleburg, Florida, along with her brother Carlton Newberry of Georgia and Nadine (Russell) Sheasley of Pennsylvania.

There will be a private memorial service held at a later date for her to be laid to rest next to her beloved husband, D.F., in Floral Memory Gardens, Albany, Georgia.
